The Multiplication Tables Check

• Year 4 pupils must sit the government’s multiplication tables check in the summer term. The vast majority of teachers and heads are against it
• The test is taken online and children must answer 25 questions with only six seconds for each response.
• Because schools are judged on the results, too much time is spent on times tables in year 4 at the expense of other maths techniques
• Teachers and parents already know how well children know their times tables. Regular tests which support learning take place in classrooms every week
